Academies of West Memphis Students are Top in the Nation

"They worked so hard to achieve the results they got,” exclaimed Dr. Ring after more than a hundred of her students were recognized at the monthly school board meeting this week. The results she speaks of are national recognition, two beautiful trophies, and a personal finance certification.

This past school year, 109 students took a W!SE Certification Test in personal finance after completing the class with Dr. Ring. Since all 109 passed the test, AWM placed first in the nation for their efforts.

“The certification can be added to their resume and taken to their jobs. Overall they are empowered with the knowledge to buy their first car or home, balance a budget, and save as well as know how to calculate interest,” commented Dr. Ring about the personal finance certification students passed.

Of those 109, 23 were male, 86 were female. Also, out of the 109, 92 were African American students and 17 were Caucasian.

“Students must be able to transition into the real world after graduating and not become influenced by predatory lenders. My overall hope is that all of my students are empowered with the knowledge to avoid bankruptcy, garnishment, and eviction,” said Dr. Ring.

Dr. Ring was recognized at the WMSD School Board meeting on Tuesday night. She was a regional finalist for Arkansas Teacher of the Year, and she is currently teaching personal finance to more AWM students in hopes of continuing to pass on more knowledge.

“Students make my heart full and I burst with pride. I focus on teaching concepts. I do not move to a new concept until I am sure every one mastered the concept. I want them to keep the money they earn and turn it into money working for them,” concluded Dr. Ring.
